Frequently Asked Questions.
Do I need to book my first class?
No. Just turn up 10 minutes early and have a chat with the instructor or give us a call. You’re welcome to stay to watch a class before taking part or you can join straight in. Be wary of any club that won’t allow you to watch a session before parting with money.
What shall I wear?
Jogging pants and a T-shirt will be fine for your first few weeks. Also bring a drink and a piece of fruit.
Are your instructors qualified and insured?
Yes. All Kiyoshi Karate classes are taught by Sensei William Anderson. Sensei Anderson has been involved in karate since 1989 and coaching since 1993. He is currently a 3rd Dan black belt in Shukokai karate and holds coaching qualifications from EKGB (English Karate Governing Body). For your peace of mind Sensei Anderson has enhanced CRB disclosure and updates his first aid training annually. Kiyoshi Karate adheres to the ‘Safeguarding Children’ guidelines as recommended by Sports Coach UK . To ensure we give the best quality tuition Sensei Anderson is currently studying towards a combined sport science and coaching degree . Kiyoshi Karate is insured through the EKF (English Karate Federation).
How old do I have to be?
We accept students from 7 years of age, there is no upper age limit.
I have no experience and my fitness needs improving. Is that ok?
No problem at all. We all started as a white belt. Kiyoshi Karate classes are progressive. You will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly your skill level and fitness improves.
How long does it take to reach black belt?
With hard work, achieving your black belt takes around three and a half to four years. Please note though, Kiyoshi Karate does not award black belt rank on attendance alone. We will guide you and support you every step of the way, but it takes discipline and determination. Anyone that achieves a Kiyoshi Karate black belt should be extremely proud.
How often are gradings held?
Progressing through the beginner level grades (white, yellow, orange, green, blue and purple) takes three months each. After this there are three brown belt ranks at intermediate level taking 6 months each to complete. After successfully achieving your final brown belt, you are then at advanced level and are entitled to take your black belt grading. It takes twelve months from final brown belt to black belt.
